Ardbeg 10 year - sample from Master of Malt (http://www.masterofmalt.com/)
Color: Faint golden straw
Nose: Lemon, peat, a little faint smoke and salty sea air
Palate: Citrus / lemon, good amount of peat, more damp sea air, a whiff of smoke. Good balance between peat and sweet citrus
Finish: Surprisingly cool, more peaty phenols, very mellow but long, a lot of lemon as it tapers off.
I can see why this is a popular classic Islay. It's very drinkable if you enjoy any peat at all. Has the constant peat notes without being overwhelming and also hits the lemon citrus and a little sea salt without any one thing being too strong. A little young tasting but very drinkable, a good introduction to Islay styles for drinkers who are not deep into the Islay or peat-heavy malts yet.
